SF Bay Ferry’s Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) Ferry Program

San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Rapid Electric Emission-Free (REEF) Ferry Program is a transformative suite of projects to transition our fleet to zero-emission propulsion technology. The program includes the electrification of our ferry floats and the development of the nation’s first high-speed, high-capacity zero-emission vessels.

The initial phases of the REEF Ferry Program include:

Construction of three small battery-electric ferries to operate on a new San Francisco waterfront neighborhoods network

Construction of two large battery-electric ferries to operate service to Oakland and Alameda

Construction of a new electric charging float for the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal

Electric charging conversion for the Treasure Island Ferry Terminal

Expansion and electrification of the Central Bay Operations and Maintenance Facility in Alameda

Future phases of the REEF Ferry Program will include additional float conversion for East Bay and San Francisco terminals, conversion of the 400-passenger Hydrus class vessels to battery electric and construction or conversion of up to 11 additional small or medium battery-electric ferries.

SF Bay Ferry has more than $150 million in local, state and federal funding to begin work on REEF. The agency and its partners expect to begin construction on the first electric ferries and electric floats in early 2025.

Big News for Mission Bay and Downtown San Francisco

On November 1, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced a $55 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant awarded to the Port of San Francisco and San Francisco Bay Ferry to build the Mission Bay Ferry Landing, enhance electric charging capacity at the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal, purchase a new 400-passenger battery-electric zero-emission ferry, and invest in building a local maritime workforce development program. These projects are critical pieces of the REEF program.

First Electric Ferry Design Released

SF Bay Ferry is seeking bids from American shipyards to build its first five zero-emission, battery-electric vessels under the REEF Program. In August, the agency released design renderings of the 150-passenger ferry in collaboration with core REEF integration team member Aurora Marine Design.
